This is so well put! Thank you for sharing Barrett's quote; it's spot-on and now I want to get my hands on the book. I love your take on the journey beyond happiness and towards meaning and a greater sense of purpose. There's also the point that the struggles along the way become the glue that binds you to others, whereas in merely pleasurable activities we're often alone.
The idea of MMORPG of Life resonates with me a lot. It was our guiding inspiration as we began developing Betwixt four years ago; it was originally called Mind Monsters: A Game of Life. Many things have changed since then but that core still remains.
I think it's so powerful when we take this playful mindset into the real world and come to view our struggles as the obstacles along the hero's journey that are par for the course. I love how you've reframed Kagan's concepts, too. Thanks so much for sharing!
